Why is it ok to euthanize our pets and other animals but it's illegal to give the same right to people?
Discuss.

In some cases, euthanasia is legal, I.E. pulling the plug on someone who is living through a tube (Human Vegetable).

Rugal great job, finally a debate to proud with. Binerexis is correct on this issue. On with euthanizing people who want to , I am against myself altogether but that is just my religious view. On my political view if someone wants to I do believe that is their choice, and they should be allowed the choice to have a painless . Now I don't believe doctors should be forced to perform euthanasia if they don't want a on their conscious.

well if you go by the pain aspect of it, the reasoning behind it as far as i know no one here can put themselves in that persons shoes or even close to it. So why cant they decide enough is enough they have lived as long as they are willing to? Also some that make the the choice to go the euthanasia route, some arent mentally capable of making that decision to the full aspect of their current mentality so thats the other argument for it. Im actually for it if they are fully aware of what their doing But im against it if they arent fully aware of what their doing Does make sense trust me

While I believe there are perfectly legitimate situations where euthanasia should be legal, it will never be legalized because how do you clearly define the parameters of when it is ok and when it is not? When does it become plain old suicide?
For instance, lets suppose we have a prisoner that is serving 30 life sentences for murding women and children. Should he/she be allowed to be euthanized? Certainly the remainder of his life is over, and hopefully he's not too comfortable, but I would say not, since he has earned the punishment that he is serving.
Another example: What about angst-ridden teenagers who turn suicidal? They may very well be in severe emotional pain for one or more reasons. Maybe they were permanently emotionally scarred somehow and feel that the rest of their lives will be nothing but pain. Does that qualify for euthanasia?
So how do you define the legal allowance for euthanasia? Mere consent? Someone in pain? No future? I don't see how you can clearly define what circumstances constitute legal suicide. That is, unless you just want to legalize suicide altogether, but I don't think that would be a good solution.
Also, the legal system would be flooded with euthanasia cases since it would certainly require notary publics or some such thing to prove that doctors aren't just killing people and saying that the person wanted to die.

Legalize suicide? Could you elaborate a little more on that? To legalize something, it first has to be illegal and, as far as I know (save for apparently somewhere in the US), it isn't illegal to commit suicide or attempt suicide.

If someone is suffering than they should be allowed to have the choice to end their misery. If they are just "depressed or emo" than no. Get help and stop seeking attention.

Yea, guess I never thought about it... cops always try to talk down jumpers and what-not so I guess I considered it illegal by default. Apparently, though, it has been considered a crime in the past in the US and in some other countries... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_views_of_suicide(yea, probably not the best source, but easy to find) Of course, only attempted suicide can be a crime.. what is this? an actual debate in the debate section? How did soulkiller let this happen?
Anyways, i believe it is matter of choice, by that person or by the person making the medical calls for that person. Either way i don't think the government can tell me i can't die if i want to.

Let's throw in a scenario here for the hell of it.
A guy gets diagnosed with cancer. It's malignant (will spread, won't recede) and has, at the very most, about 6 months to live. With Chemo, he could live longer and the cancer could even go away for a long time and he'll live another few years. Without Chemo, he could potentially be in for a long and possibly painful death. Of course, it's his right and he is able to refuse treatment but should he be allowed to be Euthanized?
Virus: So you'd still be against it religiously even if it were the lesser of two evils? (I know that debates involving religion are disallowed but, without a small aspect of it, this is going to be a one sided debate. If anyone else decides to give thoughts of their religious views on this subject, feel free to. Just don't anyone make comments which attack people's religion.)

Ok in my personel opinion for this scenario, if the man decides to not go on chemo then I believe he should be allowed the right to be Euthanized. I belive though it is in the mans best interest to get chemo however. Also, some would believe it would be the lesser of two evils bin but I'm still against it. I believe that God has a special plan for everyone, and commiting suicide in a sense is giving up on God and not accepting his plan. Heck there are some radical christians who believe that if you commit suicide you go to hell, but I dont believe that since it doesn't say either way in the Bible. So thats my religious convictions, Filak please don't ban me as Bin asked the question Remember: You Can't Stop the Virus!

I've actually studied this debate in my old (Catholic) High School so I could probably find bible quotes that support it but it could be in our best interests not to take it down the religious route

I agree, I dont believe if ya emo that taking "the easy way out" is logical. But for example: my dog a year ago had bad arthreitis and worms. It was only matter of time before she died and she was in constant pain. We all decided that it was better to end it quickly and peacefully. I wasnt a happy camper to come to that decision, my dog was as much as a family member as all of us. Also, I would think geting ones consent before "pulling the plug" would be a must in my opinion.
